Growing up as a daughter of a small scale farmer in the Little Karoo, resilience is part of who she is. Currently she is partnering with the Piket-Bo-Berg Residence Association who is a change agent, helping the PIket-Bo-Berg community to create the South Africa of their dreams. Since 1990, she is responsible for a quarterly article in the Canning Board newsletter, ‘DieKrat’ and she has written more than 50 articles on farming related issues in South Africa. Furthermore, being a mother of two daughters, three stepchildren and a step-grandmother of four grandsons, is a pride and joy.

Liebré Eigelaar

I was born and bred on the neighbouring farm of FruitLips, always having the dream to uplift and expose the hidden gems of the Piket-Bo-Berg Mountains. When the opportunity came to be involved with the fruit manufacturing factory, I jumped at the opportunity. Six months later I am sitting in the General Managers office of FruitLips, being the creator and one of the four investors of FruitLips, with the dream to do build a sustainable business, grow the employees of FruitLips, be involved in the Piket-Bo-Berg community and to allow the public to experience the Piket-Bo-Berg Mountains. I fall in love with the Piket-Bo-Berg every morning when opening the blinds of the FruitLips office window. I live and manage FruitLips according to my life motto, “I am not here to stay, but rather, to make a difference!”

Achtervlei

Achtervlei is a family owned farm with the second generation of the Eigelaar family, farming with deciduous fruit. Achtervlei is situated amongst the breath taking mountains of the Piket-Bo-Berg, 150 kilometers from Cape Town, with a spectacular view on Table Mountain at the southernmost tip of Africa.  The farm, with fruit trees in the valleys and marshes, is offering jobs to more than fifteen families, working together in building a future for generations to come.

The third generation has started to learn from the embedded knowledge to take over Achtervlei, to carry on the legacy of the Eigelaars in building a sustainable future.

FruitLips is situated on Achtervlei and relies on the fruit that is not exported.  FruitLips forms an integral part in creating jobs, getting involved in secondary agriculture and furthering the aims of building and healing our divided land.
